Negative of newspaper article, "Runaway Negro in Jail" from the book "Negro Slavery in Arkansas" by Orville W. Taylor (Durham, N.C.: Duke University Press, 1958). The image was from the "Arkansas State Gazette and Democrat," July 4, 1851, page 228f and also includes an advertisement for "Thirty Dollar Reward" for a runaway slave. Placed by Thomas Pack, Sherrif and Jailer of Saline County, "Runaway Negro in Jail" describes an apprehended slave named John that belonged to Henry Johnson of Desha County, Arkansas. Placed by J. Floyd Smith, the adverisement entitled "Thirty Dollar Reward" offers a reward for a slave named George from Smith's plantation near the Arkansas Post, Arkansas County, Arkansas. George was recently purchased from Mr. William E. Woodruff in Little Rock. George's wife lived at Dr. Watkins near Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. George escaped with another slave named Harrison, who was owned by Mr. W.R. Perry of the Arkansas County.
